What is acceptable ID to open a bank account

Due to changes in the law you have to prove who you are in order to be able to open a bank account. You also need to be able to prove your address.

Documents Accepted


Full UK passport
Other countries passport
Driving licence (preferably new style with photograph)
Company ID card
Armed Forces ID card
EU member ID card
Disabled drivers pass
Utility bill – not mobile phone bill
Department of Works and Pensions Benefit entitlement letter
Housing Benefit entitlement letter
Council Tax bill
Inland Revenue tax notification (not P45/60)
National Insurance card
Council rent card
Council tenancy agreement
Private tenancy agreement
Insurance certificate - motor/Home
Vehicle registration document (V5)
Television licence renewal notice

Other items may be acceptable and you may be able to discuss this with the bank or building society you intend opening an account with.


Students can show documents such as:-
Student matriculation/ID card
Student Award letter (SAAS)
Local Authority Award letter
