If you have a problem with your bank

Sometimes banks will waive fees for accidentally going overdrawn if you ask nicely - and don't make a habit of it! But what if you've got a bigger problem than that?

the Financial Ombudsman Service provides consumers with a free, independent service for resolving disputes with financial firms

Before you go to the ombudsman you need to have complained to the company in question

complaining to the firm directly -
It’s usually best to complain to the firm in writing. But if you phone, ask for the name of the person you speak to. Keep a note of this information, with the date and time of your call – and what was said. You may need to refer to this later.

Always stay calm and polite, however cross or upset you get.
If you shout or swear then they may put the phone down on you. Keeping calm is very important.

Try speaking to the same person if possible. If they can't help or are not available ask for whoever deals with complaints or to speak to a manager.

When you write a letter of complaint keep it short and to the point. If necessary use bullet points to get the facts down.
Keeping things straightforward allows people to understand easier what the problem is.

Write down the facts in a logical order and stick to what is relevant.
Include details like account numbers and dates.

Keep copies of letters you send.

What is that doesn't sort out the problem?

Keep all paperwork & copies relating to your complaint.
